You might look at Earth Day and think it doesn’t apply to quilting, but we guarantee it does! Two Chicks Quilting has three simple yet powerful ways that we as quilters can participate in Earth Day and make the world a better place.

Donate fabric to a good cause.

One of the most impactful ways we have to reduce waste in the quilting community is by rethinking what’s really waste. Is that fabric you have sitting in your stash truly of no use or is it just no longer your style? Instead of letting yards of good fabric languish in your stash, why not donate them to a worthy cause.. Many organizations and community groups welcome fabric donations to create quilts for those in need, such as veterans, foster children, or families affected by natural disasters. By donating your excess fabric, you not only declutter your space but also contribute to meaningful projects that bring warmth and comfort to others.

Bring home a used machine.

Buying a new machine is fun, sure, but there’s a treasure trove of pre-loved machines out there waiting to find new homes. Two Chicks Quilting makes sure that every machine that comes in to be sold is tested and inspected by their certified technicians. You can trust that your new-to-you longarm or sewing machine still has plenty of life and hours of sewing still in it when you get it from Two Chicks. Not only does purchasing a used machine keep it out of a landfill, you might be able to get upgraded features on your pre-loved machine at a fraction of the cost of a new one, allowing you to make all the quilts while treading lightly on the planet.

Get creative with upcycling.

Quilters and stitchers are masters of transformation. Who else can look at a stack of fabric or a pile of scraps and turn it into a quilt?! Embrace the spirit of upcycling by exploring techniques like crumb quilting or repurposing fabric scraps into bags or apparel decorations. Crumb quilting, in particular, is a fantastic way to breathe new life into even the tiniest remnants of fabric, creating unique and eclectic pieces that are as environmentally friendly as they are eye-catching. By upcycling and repurposing materials, you not only divert waste from landfills but stretch those creative muscles looking at scraps in a new way.

This Earth Day, let’s quilt to make a difference in the world. Whether it’s donating fabric to those in need, purchasing a used machine to reduce waste, or creatively upcycling materials to make something with a little flair, every stitch counts towards building a more sustainable future. At Two Chicks Quilting, we believe that together, quilters and stitchers everywhere can create positive change one thread at a time.
