Jelly Roll Day at Two Chicks Quilting

Welcome to the Two Chicks Quilting blog! Maybe you’ve had the opportunity to shop with us in-person or you’ve caught one of our weekly Facebook Lives to see our sales, products, samples, and with this blog, we’re excited to share with you even more pattern and project inspiration, tips and tricks, and our favorite things.

Jelly Rolls

Let’s start with a recap of one of our favorite annual events: Jelly Roll Day! The third Saturday in September is the day to celebrate these unique precuts. Jelly rolls are composed of fabric strips that measure 2 1/2″ wide by 44″-45″ long. Usually they have 40-42 strips of fabric in coordinating colors and prints from a specific fabric line. They can be a time saver as the cutting is already done! If your strip set comes from Moda, that’s an official Jelly Roll, otherwise it’s a strip set.

This year we hosted a free sew-along in our Friends of Two Chicks Quilting Facebook Group. In the group are a series of videos that guide you through the steps to create this quilt. In addition to your jelly roll, you need one yard of border fabric, and one yard for the small border and binding. It’s a sew-and-go quilt, so easy and quick!

You start by sewing your strips end to end, at a 45-degree diagonal, following the placement as they come in the jelly roll. We encourage you to just roll with it, don’t overthink it and have fun in the process. Thanks to all who participated in our free sew-along and Jelly Roll quilt race – check out just a sample of the gorgeous projects y’all finished!
